Living in Southwest Florida means sharing your zip code with some of the most persistent pests in the country. Our pest library helps you identify what you’re dealing with, understand the risks, and know when it’s time to call a professional.
Ants
Ghost ants, big-headed ants, fire ants, and carpenter ants are the most common species in SWFL. Ghost ants are tiny, trail through kitchens and bathrooms in massive numbers, and are nearly impossible to eliminate with store-bought sprays. Fire ants build mounds in yards and deliver painful stings. Carpenter ants don’t eat wood but excavate it for nesting, causing structural damage over time.
Mosquitoes
Florida’s warm, humid climate and standing water create ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes from April through October. They breed in birdbaths, gutters, retention ponds, and even bottle caps holding water. Beyond being a nuisance, mosquitoes carry diseases including West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis.
Cockroaches
American cockroaches (palmetto bugs) are the large outdoor roaches that come inside during heavy rain. German cockroaches are smaller, reproduce rapidly, and infest kitchens and bathrooms in homes and apartments. German roach infestations require professional treatment — they’re resistant to most over-the-counter products.
Termites
Subterranean termites travel through soil and build mud tubes to reach your home’s wood framing. Drywood termites fly directly into attics and wall voids. Both species are active year-round in Florida. Termite damage costs homeowners billions annually and is never covered by homeowners insurance. Annual inspections are essential.
Rodents
Roof rats are the primary rodent concern in SWFL. They travel along fence lines, power lines, and palm fronds to access attics and garages. Once inside, they chew wiring (fire hazard), contaminate insulation with droppings, and reproduce quickly. Exclusion — sealing entry points — is the only long-term solution.
Bed Bugs
Bed bugs hitchhike into homes on luggage, used furniture, and clothing. They hide in mattress seams, headboards, and baseboards, emerging at night to feed. Infestations have nothing to do with cleanliness — they can happen to anyone. Professional heat treatment is the most effective elimination method.
Spiders
Wolf spiders, brown recluses, and black widows are all found in Southwest Florida. Wolf spiders are large and fast but mostly harmless. Brown recluses and black widows are venomous and tend to hide in storage areas, garages, and undisturbed spaces. Regular pest control reduces the insects spiders feed on, which reduces spider populations.
Wasps & Hornets
Paper wasps build nests under eaves, in soffits, and around outdoor furniture. Yellow jackets nest in the ground and are aggressive when disturbed. Mud daubers are solitary and generally not aggressive but build unsightly nests on structures. Nest removal should be handled by a professional to avoid stings.
Fleas
Fleas thrive in Florida’s warm climate and are commonly brought indoors by pets. They reproduce rapidly — a single flea can lay 50 eggs per day. Effective flea control requires treating the home, the yard, and the pet simultaneously. Professional treatment targets all life stages including eggs and larvae.
Ticks
Lone star ticks and brown dog ticks are the most common species in SWFL. They’re found in tall grass, wooded areas, and overgrown landscaping. Ticks can transmit Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and other illnesses. Keeping your lawn trimmed and treating the perimeter reduces tick populations around your home.
Silverfish
Silverfish are moisture-loving insects that hide in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and storage closets. They feed on paper, glue, and starchy materials — books, cardboard, and wallpaper are common targets. They’re not dangerous but are a sign of excess moisture in your home.
Stink Bugs
Stink bugs enter homes in fall and winter seeking warmth. They release a foul odor when disturbed or crushed. While they don’t bite or cause structural damage, they can invade in large numbers and become a persistent nuisance. Sealing entry points and perimeter treatment are the best defenses.
